Frequently asked questions

Whether you're new to cryotherapy or looking for more detail, here are answers to the questions patients ask most.

What is High-Pressure Medical Cryotherapy?

High-Pressure Medical Cryotherapy (HPMC) is a targeted treatment that rapidly cools the skin over a specific area using high-pressure carbon dioxide (CO₂). Treatment is focused on the affected area rather than the whole body. Our goal is to help reduce pain and inflammation while supporting mobility and recovery.

How is it different from an ice pack?

An ice pack cools gradually and can be inconsistent. HPMC delivers controlled, high-pressure cooling to a defined treatment area, with skin temperature monitored during treatment.

Is it the same as whole-body cryotherapy?

No. Whole-body cryotherapy exposes the entire body to extreme cold, usually in a chamber. HPMC is applied only to the specific area being treated.

Does treatment hurt?

Most people describe an intense cold sensation that passes quickly. Your provider explains what to expect before treatment begins.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment typically takes about 3–6 minutes per area. Most treatment sessions last roughly 10–20 minutes, depending on the areas treated.

What conditions do patients seek HPMC for?

Patients often seek HPMC for pain and inflammation related to arthritis, sciatica, back and neck pain, shoulder, knee, and hip pain, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, bursitis, tennis and golfer's elbow, and sports injuries. See our conditions pages for details.

How many treatments will I need?

Many patients schedule a series of visits, often between 2 and 5, and some people need only one. Your plan depends on your situation, and we review how you are doing along the way. Results vary.

Is there any downtime?

Most people return to their normal activities after treatment. Your provider will discuss any recommendations specific to you.

What happens at the consultation?

We talk through your symptoms and goals, identify the area to be treated, and determine whether HPMC may be appropriate for your individual needs.

Who may not be a candidate?

HPMC may not be appropriate for everyone. Certain circulation problems, sensitivity to cold, open wounds or skin conditions in the treatment area, and other health factors can matter. We review this with you before any treatment, and you should follow your physician's guidance.

What does it cost?

Pricing depends on the number of areas treated in a session. See our pricing page for current rates.
